The country of Tanzania is not, in general, a dry place. Even in the central part of the country, rainfall averages about 21 inches (550mm) each year. Yet, in the district of Karatu, rivers are drying up. Villages like Changarawe do not have their own water wells, so villagers are forced to fetch their water in pails, often from several kilometres away.
